Visa runs, AI overwhelm, and building smart

This week, we're talking about visa runs, using AI without overwhelm, and how to leverage ChatGPT to review and summarize articles. If someone forwarded this email to you, you can subscribe here.

Hey Reader

I'm writing today from the Guatemala City airport. It’s been 90 days since we arrived here from Belize, so it’s time for a visa run. We could have made a quick border crossing into Belize by bus, but we decided to take this opportunity to visit family in Texas.

Our round-trip flight is from Guatemala City to Austin, Texas, but I’m a little nervous about whether the airline will let us back in without a return ticket to the US. I’m hoping our boat documents and 9-month permit are enough proof that we can stay here.

For us, this is one of those peculiar realities of living abroad, a minor stressor that comes with living a location-free life. But, as a fellow cruising couple says, we are doing it for the plot!

If you’re building a portable business so you can live abroad or travel full-time, remember, it’s not always palm trees and perfect sunsets.

Sometimes it’s paperwork and airport terminals.

Still worth it!

Now, let's get down to the business side of things...

AI without the overwhelm

Over the weekend, I batch-recorded a video series on simple, practical ways to utilize ChatGPT for everyday business tasks. (More on that next week.)

Then I checked YouTube’s AI trends section for thumbnail inspiration.

Big mistake!

Other videos were about building AI agents, creating AI voice podcasts with NotebookLM, and claiming you can make millions overnight.

Suddenly, my grounded, useful series felt basic.

AI is moving at the speed of light. And I recall a similar feeling of overwhelm from another era...

Twenty-five years ago, I worked in the telecom industry, right when everything was shifting from landlines to wireless, from long-distance networks to line-of-sight transmissions. It was cutting-edge stuff for that time.

The sales team would pitch features to clients that we hadn't even built yet on the network side.

It felt like we were building the plane while flying it!

It was intense and stressful, but I loved it.

Looking back, it was one of the most exciting periods in my professional life. I never thought I'd have another chance to be part of something so transformative.

Now I realize the AI shift we’re in is the same kind of moment.

But here's the thing...

While AI's potential seems limitless, you don’t need to learn every tool out there to gain from it.

You don’t have to build AI agents or generate 50 reels a week.

What you do need is a strategy...

A clear understanding of what parts of your business are slowing you down, costing you time, or draining your energy, and how AI can help.

That’s the kind of support I offer.

I help entrepreneurs step back, assess their actual business needs, and start using AI in the right places, not everywhere. You will be amazed at where you can be in 90 days.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the pace, the pressure, or the perfection out there, you’re not alone.

Take a breath.
And take one smart step forward.

Quick AI Tip: How to turn articles into social posts in minutes

A sailing friend of mine told me she spends hours each week reading long articles and extracting content to share on social. She's the social media manager for a magazine.

Here’s a two-step workflow I shared with her:

  1. Summarize
Paste the article into ChatGPT and ask for a summary of 3 to 5 points. Prompt: “Summarize this article in 5 short bullet points. Make it easy to understand.” You can either attach a document or copy and paste the article.
  2. Repurpose
Then say, “Write three social media posts using this summary. Make each post short, clear, and helpful for [your audience].” You can also specify which platform: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

That’s it! You just saved an hour.

If this kind of strategy sounds like something you need help with, reply and let me know where you’re stuck.

Let’s find the right places for AI in your business right now and leave the rest for later.

Hey Reader Have you seen the articles floating around online about the dangers of AI? This week, I read an MIT study about "cognitive debt." The premise is that using AI makes us mentally lazy and reduces our ability to think clearly. I don't know about you, but that's not my experience at all. AI doesn't make me feel dumber. It makes me feel smarter than ever. It's like having a business partner who's available 24/7, never gets tired, and helps me expand on ideas I never would have time to...
